Pursuing God through the Psalms

It’s such a privilege to be asked to contribute to this ongoing blog from a group of friends who are blogging through the Bible! You can visit the archives by clicking here.

The chapters I will be discussing is Psalms 39 & 40. David starts out talking about guarding his tongue “lest I sin” He knew that the power of life and death lies in the tongue and emphasized how even if there was a fire burning in your heart, it is best not to speak so that you will not sin with your tongue. When he did speak in verse 4, he reminded God of how frail he was and how every person is just a vapor. David recognized the magnificence of the heavenly Father.

At the end of chapter 39, David cries out to God in prayer and asks God to hear his cry and not to be silent at his tears. I am sure each and every one of us have had these moments! It feels like the heavens are brass so to speak and that our prayers are not going anywhere! David was brave enough to ask God not to be silent! In reading the Psalms, we see many times where David exposed his emotions in his prayers. That is awesome! It lets us know that we do not have to pray a certain way for God to hear us!

I love chapter 40. The chapter starts out like this:

Psalm 40 King James Version (KJV)

40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

How many of us can say this very thing? For me personally, God has brought me out of a horrible pit of depression, out of the mud and muck and set my feet upon a rock and established me! He did put a new song in my heart! He healed me of past trauma and abuse! Many have seen it and I hope that it has helped them to trust in God as well!

David goes on to say something so amazing! He describes how great God’s thoughts are of us! Stop for a moment and imagine this! God’s thoughts for us are so numerous that they cannot be counted! There is one verse that says his thoughts for us are more than the grains of sand! God is thinking of each of you right this moment! He is omnipotent and almighty! He knows the amount of hair on your head! My friend, He cares so much for you!

David goes on to talk about how it is a delight to do God’s will. He declares God’s faithfulness to us. David was an example to us of how we should let God’s loving kindness flow through us to others. Even when we have sinned, God delivers us and forgives us! God is our deliverer!

I would encourage you to begin to pray the Psalms out loud. It will unlock a deeper level of praise and worship within your heart and will ignite a passion in your worship!

What are some ways you can express your praise and worship to the Father? For me, I love to journal love letters to my creator. God has placed creativity inside of you all to express your worship!
OH Lord, how magnificent is your name! You are holy and righteous and greatly to be praised! Your thoughts of me are more than I can even count! You have me in the palm of your hand and you will never let me go! Thank you Father for all you are doing in my life! Thank you for lifting me out of the pit of despair and hopelessness. I ask that you will speak to each person reading this and let them know they can come to you, withholding nothing. They can laugh, cry, yell, express their heart however and you are there to hear them and deliver them. AMEN
